ARUA. West Nile club (West Nile Golf Club) has emerged as the winner of round five of the Uganda open tour golf tournament.

The West Nile club hosted the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) sponsored tournament over the weekend since 2009 when competition last took place at the course this time with over 10 clubs competing.

West Nile club scooped a collective sixty points from men’s groups A, B and C ladies groups A and B making best points during the game.

They were followed by Namulonge with 38 points, Tooro with 14, Entebbe with 10, Tororo 3, Uganda Golf Club 1 while Kinyara, Palm Valley and Mbarara clubs could not manage to score a single point.

In the ladies category, West Nile’s Patricia Nakuya emerged as the overall winner with 72 returns and hole handicaps of 22 before Lillian Koowe and Mackline Nsenga of Tororo who made scores of 77 each with Handicaps of 19 and 13 respectively.

In men’s category, Mr Cosma Ocirochan of Namulonge emerged as the men’s overall winner with hole handicap 14 and 63 returned an awesome with 7 under.

During the award ceremony, Uganda golf union president Mr Innocent Kihika said West Nile club was not in the list of hosting clubs in the ongoing golf tournament but its leaders lobbied to scoop position of Lugazi golf club who had declined to host the tournament this year because of ongoing renovations at the club.

Kihiki said lobby by West Nile Club also complemented the thought of Uganda Golf union of how to participate in reviving golf in West Nile (Arua) a reason why they granted the request for them to replace Lugazi as the host for the fifth tournament.

“A few years ago, I never thought that I would come to the West Nile Club, but I am glad that the club leaders are making serious efforts to rejuvenate golf in the region”, he said.

He promised that, during the December holidays of this year (2019), the Uganda golf union will carry out a clinic for the young boys and girls who are currently serving as the caddies at the Golf Course so that they develop to become future golfers in the region.

“There is a lot of potential in West Nile both on the course and off the course that we can develop through golf so that West Nile can become a name to reckon with not only in football, and if we work together we can push for the Club”, he said.

The excited team captain of West Nile Club, Mr Emmy Arima said they are looking forward as a team to becoming the overall winner after completion of the tournament.

Currently, West Nile Club is on the top of the table in Uganda open tour tournament that comprises of nine Golf clubs in Uganda.

There are four more tournaments remaining to determine the national winner of this year’s tournament which has been organized by Uganda Golf Union in conjunction with Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) and sponsored by Castle Lite, a brand of Uganda Breweries.
