MOYO. A man identified as Mr David Chachiga, a casual worker and a resident of Pamujo village, Moyo sub-county in Moyo district was crushed to death by a truck he was sleeping under on Tuesday.

The trailer with registration number UBD 309N/UBD782L was said to have brought cement to Moyo town. The driver was identified by police as Mr Abdulla Sartor, 36, a resident of Remy Goma village in Kabarole district.

“The driver had parked at around 8:00pm and slept inside the vehicle but when he woke up at around 5am, he started the engine to set off his journey to Laropi,” Mr Danoziano Opwonya, the Moyo district officer in charge of traffic confirmed.

“This vehicle passed over the head of the victim and crushed it completely. We have brought the vehicle here and we have recorded statements and investigation is ongoing. We had meetings with the relatives of the victim and some assistance was given for burial,’’ Mr Opwonya said.

He said the driver of the vehicle was arrested at Laropi ferry trying to escape and brought to Moyo central police station to record statement but was later released on police bond for purposes of easy coordination with the owner of the truck.

Mr Opwonya said the vehicle had been parked near Moi hardware shop in Moyo town but shortly after the accident, the information was spread across the district leading to the arrest of the escaping driver by counterparts from Laropi.

Mr Opwnoya has advised drivers to always check their vehicle all round before setting off for their journey. He also cautioned the public against sleeping under vehicles without the notice of the drivers to avoid such incidences in the future.

The vehicle belongs to Abasi Balinda company limited in Tororo district, a renowned company for distribution of cement across the country.

By press time Chachiga’s body had been taken for burial at his ancestral home in Pamujo village.
