NEBBI. A 32-year-old man was on Tuesday hacked to death on allegations of bewitching a woman identified as Lillian Malonge.

The deceased, Denis Ochora, a resident of Nyangu village in Nyaravur sub-county, Nebbi district was hacked in the head twice using a Panga knife as he was sleeping and died instantly.

Mr John Othuba, a resident of the same village said as they were still preparing for the burial of Malonge, one of the family members pulled out a Panga at night and hacked Ochora to death and fled.

Mr Nicholas Natajja, the OC CID Nebbi central police station (CPS) confirmed the incident and said the woman who died had a long illness but was never taken to the hospital to ascertain what she was suffering from.

Mr Natajja said the family members instead decided to go to a witch doctor who in turn told them that their sister was bewitched by Ochora.

“Police is still tracking down the unidentified man for hacking the deceased to death after it was alleged that he had a hand in the death of his deceased aunt who passed away on Sunday,” Mr Nattaja said.

He said investigations into the murder had commenced but no arrest has been made yet.

Nattaja, however, condemned the action and wondered how a whole community can be deceived into believing that any person who dies must have been bewitched yet death is most times, a natural phenomenon.

“People should stop believing in witchdoctors but in case of sickness, the sick should be taken to the hospital instead of assuming that they are being bewitched,” he cautioned.

By press time on Wednesday, the body of the deceased was still lying at Nebbi general hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem before handing it over to family members for burial.

West Nile region is still grappling with rampant cases of mob justice and brutal murders based on the suspicion of practising witchcraft.

At the beginning of January, residents of Onyire village, Logoba parish in Moyo district fled their homes after one of them shot dead a police officer.

The police had gone to the village to quell a rowdy mob following the death of two youth whom the mob suspected were poisoned by a resident of the area.
