NEBBI: The Nebbi grade one magistrate Mr Edgar Tibayeta has sentenced a juvenile to a three months imprisonment for kidnapping a child contrary to section 159 (a) of the penal code Act of Uganda.

While delivering the judgement, the magistrate said he considered the fact that the 14-year-old girl did not waste court’s time in admitting wrong doing.

Prosecution stated that the juvenile, on March 13, 2017 went to Nebbi Junior Academy and deceived a 3-year-old toddler claiming she was sent by the mother to take her home but was intercepted before she could go far with the little girl.

When brought before court, the juvenile admitted that she had been sent by a woman in Erusi Sub County to pick the child as she was promised a big amount of money on delivery of the toddler.

The magistrate reasoned that the lighter sentence was on grounds that the accused was remorseful for the offence she had committed.

"She is remorseful and pleaded guilty to the crime and that is why I have given her a lighter sentence" Tibayeta said.

But the judge cautioned parents that there were organized groups of people using teenagers to kidnap and steal children from schools.

"School authorities and parents should ensure that children are protected and register those who take and pick them from school with the school to avoid such incidences" he advised.

Court directed police to investigate the allegations brought up by the convict of the woman who sent her and bring her to book.
