NEBBI. Leaders in Nebbi district have been urged to promote disability sports as a tool for personal empowerment and social inclusion of People with Disabilities (PWD).

While addressing local leaders during the selection of district disability sport caucus committee at Nebbi district business conference hall on Monday, the focal point officer Uganda National Action on Physical Disability (UNAPD) Ms Scola Opoti said there is need for leaders to promote, advocate and popularize disability sports in schools and communities for PWD to also secure their livelihood.

“For long PWD have been left out in the participation in sports activities due to negative perception of the society who believed that the disabled persons are not capable in taking part in sports and games due to their disabilities.

Opoti also noted that since sports is a good activity for mobilisation, the district through its leaders and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) should embrace and support the disability sports programme to help improve the quality of life of PWD in the society.

The chairperson Nebbi action on physical disability Mr Fabiano Opera during the meeting noted that although most of the people in today’s society don’t understand disability sport, there is need for local government to include disability sports in the district plan and budget if PWDs are to benefit and enjoy their rights from sports activities in the society.

“There are so many talents among the PWD which are not being utilised because society thinks they are unable, it is high time they are given the opportunity to showcase these talents”, he added.

Nebbi district vice chairperson Mr Geoffrey Okello Anecho admitted that disability sports for long has been ignored right from the district to the communities, he said as a district, they are ready to give full support to see that the programme succeeds for PWDs to also exercise their ability as any other normal person in society.
