NEBBI. One person died and two others sustained serious injuries when their motorcycle collided with an incoming baby coach bus at Namrwodho river on Monday night in Nebbi district.
The deceased, identified as Gift Ayiyurwoth 23, a mother of two was being carried by on bodaboda motorcycle with three others identified as Bryan Okethwengu, 27, Fred Owachgiu and a one-year-old baby all residents of Avonu village, Paidha Sub County in Zombo district.

The rider, Okethwengu is said to have failed to negotiate the corner at Namrwodho river.

Mr Paul Odongo, an eye witness said the Boda Boda cyclist, Okethwengu, upon realizing that the bus was approaching, panicked and lost control prompting the bus to knock them off the road killing Ayiyorwoth instantly and injuring her one-year-old baby.

The Officer in Charge of traffic at Nebbi police station Mr Rogers Namanya confirmed the accident saying the critically injured baby was rushed to Arua regional referral hospital for further management while the two adults were taken to Nebbi hospital

He attributed the accident to reckless riding noting that traffic officers are still faced with the challenge of people failing to follow traffic rules and regulations adding that the Conner is a black spot.

A week prior to this incident, another Boda Boda motorcyclist also rammed into a stationed lorry killing one person.

“The motorcycle was overloaded and over speeding and that is why the rider failed to negotiate the corner and panicked when he saw the bus leading to the accident”, he said.

He observed that traffic on several occasions has been mobilizing motorcyclists for road safety campaigns but little has been realized as riders still go against traffic rules and regulations.

According to the traffic report for the past month, there have been six accidents with two fatalities, 3 serious and one minor.
