NEBBI. The police in Nebbi has arrested and detained five men for the alleged murder of a 19year old man identified as Okecha Obote, resident of Athele village Errusi sub-county Nebbi district.
It is alleged that last Sunday, the suspects had a heated argument with the deceased over a girl and they beat him death, dumped his body by the roadside and fled.
Mr Collins Urom Jalacida, the chairperson of Erussi sub-county said the five where part of a group who had gone to the village for a traditional marriage and as it is the custom that girls from that village always spend time with the men, it was unfortunate that one of the girls was Okecha’s girlfriend and that is what caused the argument.
“After seeing his girlfriend with these men, Okecha wanted to force her to leave but got into an argument with the men who ganged up and beat him to death”, he said.
He said as a sub-county, they have been fighting hard to ensure that traditional marriage takes only a day which is a Saturday but people have remained adamant especially in the villages where they still take 3 days.
According to Nebbi Officer in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Mr Nicolas Nantajja, the five suspects have been arrested and detained in connection to the gruesome murder of Okecha Obote.
“It’s true as Police we have arrested and detained the five suspects who are in our custody to help us with the investigation of the murder of one Okecha Obote”, Nantajja said.
But he cautioned members of the community against violence and taking the law into their hands adding that investigations into the murder are still on going.
