NEBBI. Police of Nebbi district are stuck with the body of unidentified man who was knocked dead on Sunday night.
Reports from police indicate that the man in his 60s was knocked by a speeding bus at Akabba trading centre in Kucwiny Sub County along Nebbi – Pakwach road.
The body of the man was later taken to Nebbi general hospital mortuary and since then, nobody has claimed it.
ASP Richard Olili, the Nebbi district traffic officer confirmed that since Sunday, no one has come to claim the body.
He said as police, they are considering handing over the body to Nebbi municipal council authority for disposal since all radio announcements to alert relatives didn’t yield positive results.
“If the relatives fail to come by the end of Wednesday, we shall be left with no more option other than asking the municipal authorities to organize temporary burial because the body can’t be kept in the hospital mortuary for so long,” Olili said
But Ms Peace Nikum, the Nebbi general hospital administrator instead said they tried to advise police to continue putting announcements on radios, arguing that there is no need to hurry handing over the body to municipal council for burial yet the relatives may show up anytime.
“People have been coming to view the body and I’m optimistic that one day, the relatives will surely land on the corpse. Keeping the body in the mortuary fridge for a longer period of time is not a problem for us,” Nikum added.
According to police, there has been general reduction in the number of accidents in the past three months with only 4 minor and serious cases reported during the period.
Olili attributes the reduction to continuous community policing which has made people to become disciplined on the road.
“My appeal is that the festive season is almost here; so people should be careful while using the road especially by not over speeding and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol,” Olili advised.
