PAKWACH. 16 traders aboard a Fuso lorry with a registration number UAV 118S are feared dead in an accident that happened on Sunday morning, about 2km to Panyimur landing site.

The lorry, according to sources was carrying mostly fish mongers from Eastern Congo town of Ariwara and some Ugandans to Panyimur market which begins on Monday.

The Fuso lorry estimated to be carrying more than 50 traders is said to have lost control at Got Malara, a black spot for accidents which locals have also nicknamed ‘Uvuru Nubi’ literally meaning the remains of Muslims after scores perished in an accident at the same spot while returning from Eid celebrations in Panyimur some years back.

Pakwack district police commander Mr. Frank Muzoora told West Nile Web that the ill-fated lorry overturned several times killing and injuring its passengers in the process.

He said the driver of the lorry who is among the survivors after sustaining critical injuries has been placed under arrest as he recovers and will help police in investigations but preliminary findings have attributed it to brakes failure.

The police commander cautioned drivers against driving vehicles in bad mechanical condition saying they are a risk to life.

The seriously injured were rushed to Angal and Nebbi hospitals while the bodies of the dead were taken to Panyimur health centre III for postmortem before being handed to the relatives.

Police, however, did not give details of the dead as they said more verification was still being done by press time.

Mr. Shaban Ofoy, the Panyimur Sub-county chairman said the government needs to urgently place road furniture at the spot to avoid further accidents along the road.
